Visiting Mama Ashanti Lavington in Nairobi was like stepping into a delightful embrace of West African culinary tradition. I stopped by on a sunny Saturday afternoon, and I couldn’t have asked for a more welcoming atmosphere as I entered this vibrant food establishment.
The moment I walked in, I was greeted by the friendly staff, including the remarkable Faith, who tended to our table with exceptional attentiveness. She was not only knowledgeable about the menu but also provided excellent wine pairing suggestions. Her service made us feel like VIPs! 😊
I couldn’t resist trying their famous Grilled Fish with Rice and Spinach Sauce, which paired beautifully with a glass of chilled white wine. Each bite of the fish was grilled to perfection, with a crispy outside that held in the moist and tender inside. The spinach sauce was the perfect accompaniment, providing a delightful depth of flavor. My friend opted for the Nigerian Food Platter, a vibrant medley that showcased various options. We shared every bite, and I must admit, it was a feast for our taste buds.
The cozy ambiance, accentuated by warm decor reminiscent of West African homes, made our meal feel even more authentic. The Jollof Spaghetti caught our attention too, renowned for its unique flavor profile. Though we didn’t get to try it this time, I heard rave reviews about it from fellow diners.
Although there were a few minor hiccups, such as the need for better organization in serving waakye traditionally, our experience was overwhelmingly positive. It’s refreshing to see a restaurant that values traditions while also being mindful of customer feedback.
We enjoyed our food to the fullest, and I must say that these dishes offered great value for money. After our delightful meal, I chatted with Ms. Beatrice, who exuded warmth and hospitality. She shared stories about the origins of some of the recipes, reinforcing the cultural connection that Mama Ashanti strives to maintain.
Mama Ashanti Lavington continues to succeed in creating an authentic experience right in the heart of Nairobi. From the attentive staff, the vibrant decorations, to the tantalizing dishes, it’s a place where you can savor the love and tradition of West African cooking. Overall, I would rate my experience a solid 5 stars and can’t wait to return for another comforting meal. If you're in Nairobi and in the mood for delicious Ghanaian cuisine, Mama Ashanti is definitely a must-visit!
